Sci-Fi Colony’s Definition of Science Fiction.
- A: Science Fiction is a genre of Speculative Fiction that can be loosely defined as a fictionalized story wherein the setting and plot are centered around technology, time travel, parallel universes, fictional worlds, alternative histories, outer space, or scientific principles, with or without the presence of aliens. Within the Science Fiction genre, several sub-genres are created, further exploring this most creative genre in alliteration, however; science fiction is divided into three broad categories:
- 1) Hard Sci-Fi - This category is typically baked on scientific fact and inspired by “hard” natural sciences like physics, chemistry, and astronomy.
- 2) Soft Sci-Fi - This category is typically based on ideologies that are not scientifically accurate, or they’re inspired by “soft” social sciences like psychology, anthropology, and sociology.
- 3) Science Fantasy - This category simultaneously draws upon or combines tropes and elements from Science Fiction and Fantasy. This literature is presented as scientifically logical and often contains elements disregarding the scientific laws of the natural world but usually supplies logical explanations using science to explain supernatural events.
- B: Within these broad categories listed above exist several sub-genre that include, but are not limited to: Fantasy, Supernatural, Utopian, Dystopian, Space Opera, Space Western, and Punk.
